Jannik Sinner brought Italy to the Davis Cup championship after nearly 50 years

Jannik Sinner shined at the end of the year, leading the Italian team to defeat Australia 2-0 in the final and be crowned the 2023 Davis Cup champion after nearly 50 years of waiting.
Matteo Arnaldi and Jannik Sinner made history with the second Davis Cup title for Italy since 1976. With this championship, Sinner and his teammates will receive 2.1 million USD in prize money.

The 22-year-old Sinner showed his bravery at the end of the year when he defeated Djokovic twice in less than 2 weeks of competition. More broadly, Jannik won 3 victories with 1 more decisive doubles match to send Serbia and Djokovic home.

After eliminating Djokovic and Serbia, Italy had a difficult first singles match when Matteo Arnaldi (Italy) took 3 matches to win against Alexei Popyrin with a score of 2-1 (7-5, 2-6, 6-4).

In the second singles match, Sinner continued to show the world No. 4 player’s superior class against Alex De Minaur. After 2 sets, the Italian player won an overwhelming 2-0 (6-3, 6-0) victory over De Minaur.

“I want to sincerely thank Matteo, he has had a difficult year, struggling with injuries. The fact that he is here with us has brought positive energy” – Jannik expressed after the championship with Matteo Berrettini – a senior on the national team who was present in Malaga to cheer on the Italian team.

Closing the tournament, tennis fans will wait until January next year to witness the exciting matches of the new season starting at the Australian Open (January 14 to 28).
